Why Lacrifill Canalicular Gel?
Lacrifill is a simple medical procedure designed to help people who suffer from dry eye disease. It works by gently filling the small drainage channels in your eyelids that normally carry tears away from the eye.
By slowing down tear drainage, Lacrifill helps keep your natural tears on the surface of your eye for longer – improving comfort and protecting the ocular surface.
Lacrifill is effective for up to 6 months and remains in place until removal at 6 months.
The clinical trial with Lacrifill has shown:
- Significant improvements in signs and symptoms of dry eye for 6 months.
- That it was well tolerated, easy to insert and easy to remove at 6 months.
How Lacrifill helps your eyes
Your eyes stay healthy when they are covered by a stable layer of tears.
In people with dry eye, tears often drain away too quickly. This leaves the surface of the eye exposed and can lead to symptoms such as:
- Dryness
- Burning or irritation
- Grittiness or the feeling of something in the eye
- Fluctuating or blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
Lacrifill works by filling the tear drainage canal (the canaliculus), reducing tear drainage and allowing your natural tears to remain on the eye surface for longer.
This can help:
- Improve tear retention
- Support a healthier ocular surface
- Reduce dry eye symptoms

In most cases the treatment takes only a few minutes.
Step 1 – Preparation. Your eyecare professional will place a topical anaesthetic drop into your eye to ensure you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Next they will flush your lacrimal systme with saline solution to ensure it is clear.
Step 2 – Lacrifill administration. Your eyecare professiional will administer the Lacrifill gel directly into your tear drainage canal (punctum) – filling the canal with the gel.
Step 3 – Completion. Once in place, Lacrifill forms a barrier within the canaliculus that temprorarily blcoks tear drainage, helping to maintain lubricating tears on the surface of your eyes
